Autumn arrived with vigor, ushered in by the seasons of Virgo and Libra — both cultivating a remarkable lineup of stars such as Usher, Queen Naija, and Beyoncé, among many others. Yet, come October 22, the Sun shifted into Scorpio, lingering until November 21. Aptly symbolized by the scorpion, the eighth zodiac sign embodies quintessential water sign characteristics: fierce passion, unwavering loyalty, and relentless determination.
Within the Hip Hop realm, artists like Drake and Future illuminate this sign’s mystique. Meanwhile, in R&B, Scorpio embraces vocal titans such as Grammy Award-winning SZA and Frank Ocean, who retains a significant cultural footprint despite an almost eight-year break since the release of Blonde. Below, Rap-Up has curated a selection of notable Scorpio vocalists that everyone ought to recognize, including Mariah the Scientist, Miguel, and others.
1. SZA
Few musicians can rival the artistry of SZA. In 2012, she unveiled her inaugural EP, See.SZA.Run, before joining Top Dawg Entertainment the following year. Among her most cherished works, CTRL and SOS remain prominent, reigning on the Billboard 200 charts for an extended period post-release. The former features contemporary R&B anthems like “Love Galore,” “The Weekend,” and “Drew Barrymore.” Born on November 8, 1989, SZA has collaborated with Drake, Future, and ScHoolboy Q.
2. Frank Ocean
Frank Ocean’s journey is shrouded in enigma, perhaps for the best. Born on October 28, 1987, this California native began his career as a songwriter, teaming up with artists like John Legend (“Quickly”), Brandy (“1st & Love”), and Justin Bieber (“Bigger”) prior to stepping into the spotlight himself. A member of Odd Future, Ocean has produced some unforgettable pieces, including nostalgia, ULTRA, channel ORANGE — which features “Thinkin Bout You” — and Blonde.
3. Ciara
From early hits like “Goodies” and “Promise” to the Nicki Minaj collaboration “I’m Out,” Ciara’s musical contribution is evident. Born on October 25, 1985, this Texas native has achieved platinum certification more times than one can count. Beyond her musical talent, the CiCi performer takes on numerous roles: she’s an actress, a mother of four, and the founder of her own record label, Beauty Marks Entertainment, which released her seventh project, Beauty Marks.
4. Ella Mai
Ella Mai’s ascent to fame intriguingly commenced with an audition for Season 11 of “X Factor UK” as part of the trio Arize. Born on November 3, 1994, she spent her formative years in England before relocating to New York City at 12. Between 2015 and 2017, the artist released four EPs: Troubled, Time, CHANGE, and READY. A year later, her self-titled debut album dropped, featuring the fan-favorite “Boo’d Up.” More recently, she released her sophomore album, 2022’s Heart On My Sleeve, and welcomed a child with NBA champion Jayson Tatum.
5. WILLOW
With two entertainment royalty figures as parents, WILLOW swiftly showcased her musical talents, debuting with 2010’s “Whip My Hair.” The track, released through JAY-Z’s Roc Nation, came a hair’s breadth away from a Top 10 entry on the Hot 100. However, much like her brother Jaden, WILLOW has transformed considerably over the years. The 2015 work ARDIPITHECUS included the viral hit “Wait a Minute!” While her following albums: lately I feel EVERYTHING, ˂COPINGMECHANISM˃, and empathogen propelled the Scorpio artist – born on October 31, 2000 – into the limelight of alternative music.
6. Omarion
Longtime B2K admirers have been familiar with Omarion since the late 1990s. Alongside Lil’ Fizz, J-Boog, and Raz-B, the lead R&B vocalist enjoyed commercial achievements with tracks like “Uh Huh,” “Girlfriend,” and the chart-topping “Bump, Bump, Bump.” After the disbandment of the boy band, Omarion — born on November 12, 1984 — released his debut solo album in 2005, titled O, followed by 2006’s 21. Significant hits from the California artist include the Wale-assisted “M.I.A.” and “Post To Be,” featuring Chris Brown and Jhené Aiko.
7. Ann Marie
“Baby, what’s your zodiac sign? / I’m a Scorpio, so you know I’m on real demon time,” Ann Marie crooned in the 2022 track “Freak Nasty.” Born on November 20, 1995, the Chicago artist catapulted to success with her breakout single “Secret” featuring YK Osiris. Subsequently, she released standout projects like Pretty Psycho, Hate Love, and Pain Never Looked This Good, which were divided into two parts: Night and Day.
8. Miguel
Miguel showcases his versatility, which is evident in his 2010 debut album, All I Want Is You. This thirteen-track collection featured the massive hit “Sure Thing,” along with the titular track featuring J. Cole and “Girl With The Tattoo Enter.lewd.” Born on October 23, 1985, the R&B stalwart has since released albums like Kaleidoscope Dream, Wildheart, and War & Leisure. Additionally, Miguel has contributed his voice to numerous hits throughout the 2010s, including J. Cole’s “Power Trip,” ASAP Rocky’s “Everyday,” Wale’s “Lotus Flower Bomb,” and “Weekend” by the late Mac Miller.
9. Mariah the Scientist
Before she became the global sensation she is now, Mariah the Scientist was a biology student at St. John’s University. Interestingly, she previously dated Lil Yachty before debuting her album, MASTER, in 2019. Welcomed into existence on October 27, 1997, Mariah even honored her zodiac sign on To Be Eaten Alive, which prominently features a scorpion on its cover.
“I’m a Scorpio, so I equate myself to a scorpion. At first glance, a scorpion seems more humble. It hides away, and you might not be aware of its abilities,” the singer-songwriter revealed to Complex in 2023.
