“THESE PENS ARE TERRIBLE”
Even though there is no lack of Mickey Mantle autographs circulating in the marketplace, a particularly distinctive item is currently up for grabs at Lelands … a cardstock piece measuring 14″ x 20″ that boasts 99 signatures from the MLB icon, along with a humorous note regarding the awful pen he used for his signatures!!
The legendary Number 7, considered one of the best baseball players ever to grace the field, first signed his iconic autograph many years ago for a friend who owned a business that sold statues.
Mantle autographed the cardstock 46 times using a black felt-tip pen … before switching it up (yes, we realize it’s a different sport).
“THESE PENS ARE TERRIBLE” … the baseball great noted with an arrow pointing to his prior signature.
Then, without skipping a beat, Mickey proceeded to write his name 53 additional times … culminating in a total of 99 signatures.
Just so you know, Mantle held a reputation for being a perfectionist with exquisite handwriting. Take a look at the image … stunning penmanship.
The exclusive artifact is currently up for bidding … but it’s not going to be inexpensive. Although the auction began at $10K, it’s certain to fetch much more in the end.
In fact, the cardstock has already received 37 bids, with the current price reaching $70K.
Mantle, a 20-time All-Star and a three-time AL MVP who celebrated seven World Series victories, passed away in 1995 at the age of 63. Mickey signed numerous autographs, especially in his later years … but you’d be hard pressed to find a more intriguing backstory than that of these signatures.
Best of luck!!!
