“THESE WRITING TOOLS ARE TERRIBLE”
Though the market is rich with Mickey Mantle signatures, there’s an extraordinary piece currently up for grabs at Lelands: a 14″ x 20″ cardstock inscribed 99 times by the baseball icon himself, complete with a humorous note regarding the poor pen he utilized for his autographs!
Renowned as one of the greatest players ever to grace a baseball field, he penned his iconic Mickey Mantle signature decades ago for a friend who managed a business selling statues.
Using a black felt tip marker, Mantle signed his name 46 times on the cardstock … before changing his approach (we know, wrong sport).
“THESE WRITING TOOLS ARE TERRIBLE” … the slugger sketched with an arrow directing to his previous sig.
Then, without skipping a beat, Mickey went on to sign his name an additional 53 times … reaching a grand total of 99 signatures.
Notably, Mantle had a reputation for being a perfectionist with exquisite handwriting. Just take a glance at the image … stunning calligraphy.
This extraordinary item is currently available for bidding … but it won’t be inexpensive. While the starting bid is set at $10K, it is anticipated to sell for significantly more.
In fact, the cardstock piece has already received 37 bids, with the price soaring to $70K.
Mantle, a 20-time All-Star and three-time AL MVP who clinched seven World Series titles, sadly passed away in 1995 at the age of 63. Mickey signed numerous items, especially in his later years … but finding a more intriguing story than the one accompanying these autographs may prove difficult.
Best of luck!!!
