The relatives of Erik and Lyle Menendez are advocating for their liberation from incarceration, holding a press briefing outside a courthouse in Los Angeles…and TMZ is broadcasting live.
Rosie O’Donnell is set to lend her voice in support of the Menendez brothers… while nearly twenty family members have journeyed from various states to urge L.A. County District Attorney George Gascón to formally suggest a reconsideration of sentencing for the infamous perpetrators.
The Menendez brothers’ defense lawyer, Mark Geragos, is also anticipated to deliver comments… along with three cousins and an aunt of the Menendez brothers who will take to the microphone.
Among the significant new evidence anticipated to be presented is a letter penned by Erik mere months before the tragic event in which he and Lyle took their parents’ lives… a letter that allegedly reveals his discussions with cousin Andy Cano regarding the maltreatment they endured from their father, Jose Menendez.
Reportedly, Andy’s mother discovered Erik’s letter around nine years past… during the Menendez brothers’ trial, Andy testified that Erik confided in him about the alleged abuse from their father when he was merely 13 years old. Unfortunately, Andy passed away in 2003, so he will not be present at the press briefing.
As previously mentioned, earlier this month, D.A. Gascón revealed that his office is reassessing evidence pertinent to the Menendez case… and the district attorney noted he had received reports of additional abuse allegations against Jose, made by former Menudo member Roy Rosselló.
Erik and Lyle have been incarcerated since 1990… during their initial trial, they provided testimony regarding abuse by their father, resulting in a hung jury—however, a judge rejected such testimony in their retrial—they are currently serving life sentences with no chance of parole.
It will be intriguing to observe what the family has to convey in this matter… they appear to be optimistic that this new evidence could lead to the overturning of Erik and Lyle’s sentences.
