Erik and Lyle Menendez should not be released from prison due to recently emerged molestation accusations against their father… at least that’s the perspective of a journalist who reported on the brothers’ inaugural trial.

USC journalism educator Alan Abrahamson appeared on “TMZ Live,” where we solicited his opinions on the Menendez brothers’ recent attempts to gain freedom from prison, despite serving life sentences without the possibility of parole.
Alan reported on Erik and Lyle’s first extensively covered trial back in 1993 — which resulted in a mistrial — for the Los Angeles Times… he expresses that he perceives the brothers as cold-blooded killers who ought to remain incarcerated for their entire lives.
Erik and Lyle’s family members are advocating for their release, asserting that fresh evidence suggests Jose Menendez abused them. Prosecutors are currently reviewing these new claims and will determine if a retrial or new sentencing — likely manslaughter — should be pursued, which could potentially lead to their freedom.

Alan asserts that the allegations of molestation are irrelevant … he argues that even if Erik and Lyle experienced abuse and were terrified of their parents, they were not in imminent peril when they launched their attack on their mother and father in their Beverly Hills residence and executed them with shotguns while the pair were watching television in 1989.
There has also been considerable discussion surrounding the judge in the second trial prohibiting the inclusion of evidence regarding Jose’s alleged abuse of his children … but Alan explains to us why this is being misconstrued.
It’s a compelling discussion … don’t miss the complete interview airing tonight on “TMZ Live.”
