The reason behind Rich Homie Quan’s passing has been officially established. As reported by the Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office on Tuesday (Oct. 1), the artist succumbed to an unintentional drug overdose.
According to TMZ, the findings indicated a blend of substances in his system, such as fentanyl, alprazolam, codeine, promethazine, and THC. Quan, whose birth name was Dequantes Devontay Lamar, departed at the young age of 34 on September 5. There were no indications of physical trauma, the report further clarified.
Boosie Badazz and Jacquees were among the early figures to express their condolences. “[I will] never forget yo’ smile, [and] the way [you] spoke, [and] of course yo’ music,” the Baton Rouge artist remarked on Twitter. Simultaneously, Quavo shared a nostalgic picture featuring Migos, Young Thug, and Quan, while also suggesting a reconciliation with Offset.
The family of the “Type of Way” performer conveyed to People, “While he leaves behind an irreplaceable void in our hearts, we find solace in knowing his music and indomitable spirit persist. Quan’s legacy will eternally serve as a soundtrack to our existence. For this, we are immensely thankful. Details about the celebration of his life will be shared shortly. Our gratitude extends to everyone for their kind messages and support during this challenging period.”
A memorial service took place in College Park, Georgia on September 17, with Killer Mike and D.C. Young Fly giving heartfelt addresses. That same day, Quan’s family released his first posthumous single, “Song Cry,” across streaming services. It remains uncertain whether this release is a standalone offering or part of a larger future endeavor, but the Coma artist’s father, Corey Lamar, assured fans that they will not keep his music hidden away.
“We had recently finished a project consisting of 20 to 25 songs, and we were in the midst of planning two video shoots for our project,” the father shared in a discussion with WSB-TV. “Once he gets into the groove of recording, those tracks become old to him, and as they age, he desires to concentrate on fresh material.”
