According to Chow Lee, the phenomenon of sexy drill is making waves across the globe. On Monday (Sept. 23), the creator of “ms.beautiful V” shared insights with Billboard about the development of this subgenre in collaboration with Cash Cobain and Lonny Love, while also highlighting its increasing impact.
When inquired about what sparked the idea for sexy drill, Lee revealed to the outlet, “It emerged naturally during our creative journey. We discuss women a lot, and Cash is the wizard behind the production. I might suggest a song for him to sample, or he’ll find one himself. He’ll browse YouTube, asking, ‘Can you give me a track to sample?’ Then, he’ll take it from there. We just vibe and rap on it.”
Cobain was responsible for creating the majority of the tracks on Lee’s recent album, SEX DRIVE. Alongside previously loved hits like “swag it!” and “act bad twin!”, the extensive 19-track project also features artists such as AJ Tracey, Roy Woods, Flo Milli, Sleepy Hallow, Bay Swag, and Anycia.
Regarding his collaboration with the London artist on “im not really spiritual!”, Lee expressed, “It demonstrates how artists from various backgrounds can unite in sexy drill. For instance, Tracey brings his U.K. flair to it. This genre transcends borders; it has evolved beyond New York.”
Talking about the project itself, the New York rapper stated, “A slizzy summer is all about being outdoors. It’s a way of life. It embraces women, enjoyment, and authenticity. It’s about not being foolish while managing your responsibilities at the same time.” He added, “I aim to keep it PG-13, but it really says what it needs to say.”
Lee is set to perform at 2024’s Rolling Loud Miami on December 13 — just a day ahead of Cobain’s scheduled performance. This milestone event was revealed back in August, with Future, Travis Scott, and Playboi Carti as the headline performers.
