Michael Newman, widely recognized for his portrayal as lifeguard Mike “Newmie” Newman in “Baywatch,” has passed away … 18 years after receiving a diagnosis of Parkinson’s disease.
He succumbed to heart-related issues Sunday evening, enveloped by his loved ones — with the heartbreaking news confirmed on Tuesday by his friend Matt Felker, who directed Hulu’s latest “Baywatch” documentary.

Matt informed PEOPLE, “I had the chance to see Mike the last moment he was aware, and he looked [at] me and, true to his nature, said, ‘You’re just in time.'” Felker also shared an extensive tribute to Michael on his Instagram.
Michael Newman was a beloved figure on the legendary ’90s Californian beach series, featuring in 150 episodes — more than any other cast member except for David Hasselhoff.
He was notably the sole cast member who was an actual lifeguard … and he also served as a firefighter, balancing both professions while acting on the show. Following the conclusion of “Baywatch” in 2001, he returned to firefighting full-time, until his retirement.
Michael was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease at the age of 50, and his story was featured in Felker’s “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun.” He shared with PEOPLE in August that his struggle with the illness had allowed him ample time for reflection, imparting a wealth of wisdom.
Over the past five years, he collaborated with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to generate funding for Parkinson’s research and seek a cure.
Michael is survived by his spouse Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, along with their 1-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.
He was 68 years old.
Rest in Peace
