This year has been bustling for OVO Sound’s leading lady, Naomi Sharon. She delighted her audience with tracks such as “Nothing Sweeter” and “Goodbyes (Myrrh)” alongside DJ Snake, before being invited to join Tems on her “Born In The Wild World Tour” as a supporting artist.
On Friday (Sept. 20), the “Definition of Love” songstress discussed her journey of being discovered by Drake with Billboard. She shared her insights on how the Canadian megastar provides feedback and, notably, why the pair have yet to collaborate on a track. “I don’t like to force creativity,” she expressed.
“We’ve talked about it, but it’s more about finding the right moment,” Sharon explained to the publication. “We both have a strong sensitivity to music. When he hears something that feels right, then it will happen. That would be incredible.”
Drake frequently teams up with artists from his OVO label. He and PARTYNEXTDOOR have produced hits like “Come and See Me,” “Recognize,” “Over Here,” and “Loyal.” Furthermore, there is a collaborative album set to be released this fall. dvsn contributed their voices to “Faithful” from the 2016 album Views. His label also includes talents like Popcaan (“We Caa Done”), Majid Jordan (“Stars Align”), and Roy Woods (“Drama”).
Sharon joined OVO Sound in 2023, and later released Obsidian by year-end. This collection of 13 tracks included hits like “Another Life,” “Time And Trust,” and “Push” featuring Omah Lay. As the artist revealed, it was Drake who encouraged her to incorporate more upbeat songs on the album.
“He told me, ‘I can envision you working in various styles that you can call your own. Why not challenge yourself to go faster-paced?’ The initial songs I created leaned towards neo-soul. He suggested, ‘You can definitely blend that with your sound and explore crossover opportunities,’” Sharon elaborated. “I found that to be incredibly inspiring.”
