Earlier this year, whippits — a recreational form of nitrous oxide — surged in popularity as ‘Galaxy Gas,’ largely influenced by TikTok. On Thursday (Sept. 19), SZA took to social media to express her concerns regarding the potential psychoactive effects of this substance, particularly on Black youth.

“Apologies for being old and bothersome, but is nobody addressing the fact that Galaxy Gas appeared suddenly and is aggressively marketed to Black children?” she posted on Twitter. “Is the government doing NOTHING? When did we start selling [whippits] in stores? Someone needs to safeguard the youth.”

The artist behind “Love Galore” also attached a screenshot detailing the possible repercussions of nitrous oxide usage, which may lead to neurological and mental health issues. “There’s something unsettling about the playful designs and marketing that seem aimed at kids, with stars and vibrant colors? Are you intentionally trying to lure the children?” she tweeted further.

Interestingly, Galaxy Gas is available for purchase from online platforms such as Amazon, showcasing an array of flavors: strawberry cream, mango smoothie, vanilla cupcake, blue raspberry, and many others.

In response to criticism on The Shade Room’s repost, SZA clarified, “I understand whippits have existed since our youth. However, Galaxy Gas was established in 2021 in the Atlanta area and is being marketed toward children.”

“It features playful branding and is sold at Walmart and gas stations like cigarettes. That’s not typical. Stop being oblivious and assist these kids, please,” she wrapped up her statement.

Earlier this week, Chief Keef‘s associate and 43B signee Lil Gnar went viral for demonstrating to his followers how to utilize Galaxy Gas “without messing up your brain.” In his video, he removed the nozzle and tossed it directly into the dumpster. This action earned accolades from Ty Dolla Sign, who shared a GIF of Morgan Freeman applauding, along with support from fellow artists such as Waka Flocka Flame, KARRAHBOOO, and Stunna 4 Vegas, among others.
