It appears that Tyla’s self-titled debut album will no longer compete for recognition in R&B at the forthcoming 67th Grammy Awards. Instead, the talented South African artist is anticipated to enter the race within the pop categories, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (Oct. 21).

As stated by the magazine, the album TYLA was “reassigned to Best Pop Vocal Album” by The Recording Academy’s R&B eligibility panel, which comprises fellow musicians, songwriters, and producers. Should the artist known for “On and On” secure a nomination, she might find herself in competition with Sabrina Carpenter’s chart-topping Short n’ Sweet, Ariana Grande’s eternal sunshine, and Taylor Swift’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT — the latter notably achieving 15 consecutive weeks at number one on the Billboard 200.

In light of this development, Tyla took to X to share a message saying, “I make it all,” accompanied by a blowing kiss emoji. Her debut studio album features 14 tracks that blend pop, R&B, and amapiano sounds, including tunes like “Truth or Dare,” “On My Body” featuring Becky G, and “Butterflies.”

It’s also important to highlight that “Water” won the award for Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards held in February.

During the MTV Video Music Awards in September, Tyla asserted that “African music is capable of being pop music, too.” While receiving the accolade for Best Afrobeats, she elaborated, “There’s often a tendency to categorize all African artists under the Afrobeats genre. While Afrobeats has made significant strides and opened numerous doors for us, African music is incredibly varied.”

TYLA + was released earlier this month, featuring three fresh tracks. It includes “PUSH 2 START,” “BACK to YOU,” and “SHAKE AH” featuring Tony Duardo, Optimist Music ZA, and Ez Maestro. Tyla is anticipated to promote the deluxe edition with a series of performances in South Africa. Fans can look forward to seeing her at Cape Town’s GrandWest Grand Arena on December 5 and Pretoria’s SunBet Arena on December 7.
