Tyla revealed that she “literally can’t” have a meal just before stepping on stage during a candid conversation with BLACKPINK’s Lisa on Thursday (Oct. 17). In their chat for Rolling Stone‘s “Musicians on Musicians,” the duo delved into topics such as their fan engagement, music releases, and pre-show rituals.
“I must eat well in advance because I believe if I eat close to performance time, I fear something might go awry. If my digestive system acts up, oh no. I prefer to avoid any mishaps,” the “Jump” vocalist humorously expressed regarding the latter discussion point.
“I enjoy praying with my team, listening to upbeat tunes, and sharing a laugh. I center myself and simply trust that the show will be fantastic.” Both Tyla and Lisa were musical performers at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show this past Tuesday (Oct. 15). The South African singer kicked off her set with “Water,” which was followed by “PUSH 2 START” from TYLA+.
Earlier in their exchange, the Grammy Award-winning artist discussed the reasons why it “took some time” to bring her first studio album to life, which was released in March. “I had a distinct vision for it. I wanted to remain authentic to my roots — of course, incorporating African music — while also blending in several pop and R&B elements,” she elaborated. “It required collaborating with many people to fine-tune the sound. Once I finally achieved that, I just jumped in. It was such a relief reaching that goal.”
TYLA features collaborations with Travis Scott, Tems, and Gunna, in addition to notable tracks such as “ART” and “Water.” The latter won Best Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. During her acceptance speech, the global sensation also highlighted that “African music can just as easily be pop music.”
Sadly, Tyla had to cancel her tour planned to promote the album due to a deterioration in her injury. Nevertheless, she is scheduled for a series of three performances in South Africa set for December.
