ASAP Rocky, Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, and Pharrell Williams have been named as co-chairs for the 2025 Met Gala, as announced by Vogue on Wednesday (Oct. 9). The forthcoming gala will embrace the theme “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style,” drawing inspiration from Monica L. Miller’s groundbreaking work, “Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity.”
As reported by the publication, the exhibition will showcase “garments, paintings, photographs, and various art forms — all interrogating the profound style of Black men within the narrative of dandyism, from the 18th century to the present.”
In addition to the aforementioned stars, Anna Wintour will maintain her long-standing role as co-chair, joining forces with LeBron James, who is anticipated to take on the title of honorary co-chair. The specifics regarding the dress code will be released in early 2025, while “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” will be exhibited from May 6 to October 26 of that year.
On the rationale behind selecting Rocky, Williams, and others as co-chairs, Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute Curator in Charge, stated, “These are individuals who embrace boldness in their self-presentation. They harness traditional forms, yet they also reinterpret and deconstruct them in uniquely innovative manners. I believe Black men and Black designers are truly leading this exciting new movement in menswear.”
Rocky’s latest appearance at the Met Gala was in 2023, when he graced the red carpet with Rihanna, donning an exquisite custom Gucci outfit. Conversely, Williams has made his presence felt at the gala five times, including in 2017, during his role as co-chair for the “Rei Kawakubo/Comme des Garçons: Art of the In-Between” theme.
