As a pivotal swing state, Michigan is currently in the spotlight ahead of the U.S. presidential election. On Tuesday evening (Oct. 22), Vice President Kamala Harris showcased prominent figures at her rally in Detroit. Eminem energized the audience by urging everyone to participate in the voting process, followed by a compelling address from former President Barack Obama.
“I jotted down a few thoughts I wanted to share,” the Encore rapper began. “As many of you are aware, Detroit and my home state of Michigan hold a special place in my heart. With this election approaching, we are under more scrutiny than ever, and I believe it’s vital for you to make your voice heard. So, I’m urging everyone to please get out and vote.”
Eminem later reiterated that “individuals shouldn’t hesitate to share their views,” highlighting the necessity of safeguarding freedom of expression. He continued, “Vice President Harris envisions a future for our nation where this liberty, along with many others, will be preserved and honored.” Catch the complete clip below.
Obama shortly followed, playfully confessing that he was “feeling a certain way after Eminem’s performance.” He then playfully reinterpreted the lyrics to 2002’s “Lose Yourself”: “Palms are sweaty, knees feel weak, arms are heavy/ Throw up on my sweater already, mom’s spaghetti/ I’m anxious, though on the outside, I’m calm by now.”
As the audience erupted in cheers, the ex-president humorously stated, “I thought Eminem was going to put on a concert, and I was ready to join him on stage.” At another point, Obama also took some playful shots at Republican nominee Donald Trump, who had visited Detroit the prior Friday (Oct. 18).
On the music front, Eminem released The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grâce) in July. This album features 19 tracks, including standout hits such as “Renaissance”, “Tobey” featuring Big Sean and BabyTron, and “Houdini,” where he alluded to the 2020 shooting incident involving Megan Thee Stallion. Other notable artists featured on the project include JID, Jelly Roll, and Skylar Grey.
