He was notably the only cast member who had been a real-life lifeguard … additionally, he also served as a firefighter, balancing both professions while appearing on the show. Following the conclusion of “Baywatch” in 2001, he resumed firefighting full-time until his retirement.
Michael received a Parkinson’s disease diagnosis at the age of 50, and his experience was featured in Felker’s “After Baywatch: Moment in the Sun.” He mentioned to PEOPLE in August that his struggle with the illness had offered him ample time for introspection and imparted a great deal of insight.
He dedicated the last 5 years collaborating with the Michael J. Fox Foundation to generate funding for Parkinson’s research and pursue a cure.
Michael is survived by his spouse Sarah, their children Chris and Emily, along with their one-year-old granddaughter, Charlie.
He was 68 years old.
Rest in peace.
