Chris Brown is set to perform at Johannesburg’s First National Bank Stadium in South Africa on December 14 and 15. Even though one of the performances has already sold out, there are individuals who don’t wish to see the R&B star on stage, particularly due to his controversial history.
Earlier this month, Women For Change initiated a petition urging the South African government to reconsider their choice to allow the “No Guidance” star to take the stage. “When I learned about Chris Brown coming to South Africa, I was astonished and profoundly disheartened,” stated the executive director of the non-profit organization, Sabina Walter, in an interview with BBC.
She added, “The petition was created to convey a firm statement that we cannot stand for the glorification of those with a violent history towards women.” As of the latest updates, the petition has collected over 39,000 signatures, with more than 6,500 registered on just Wednesday (October 16).
Brown addressed the backlash on Tuesday (October 15) by commenting on Women for Change’s TikTok repost about the situation: “Can’t wait to come.” It remains unclear if he was mocking the organization or expressing sincerity, but his comment attracted an impressive 1,000 responses and nearly 7,000 likes.
The two shows in South Africa are part of Brown’s “The 11:11 Tour,” which concluded its North American leg in August. Accompanied by Ayra Starr and Muni Long on selected dates, the Grammy-winning artist performed in major cities including Boston, Philadelphia, Houston, Oakland, and Las Vegas.
Prior to the tour, Brown released the deluxe edition of 11:11, his eleventh studio album. This edition introduced new tracks like “Go Girlfriend,” “Delusional,” and “Freak.” In the latter, he took some digs at Quavo, igniting a back-and-forth of diss tracks and online barbs between the two.
