Donald Trump took a jab at his Democratic opponents during his address at the Al Smith charity gala in New York City on Thursday night, ridiculing Senator Chuck Schumer and vice-presidential candidate Tim Walz for backing transgender rights.
Standing beside his wife Melania, the Republican presidential candidate, clad in a tuxedo, ridiculed the Democrats at the bustling dinner attended by elite figures from New York, such as Mayor Eric Adams, Governor Kathy Hochul, and former mayors Mike Bloomberg and Bill de Blasio.
This renowned event attracts presidential hopefuls from both parties every four years before the November elections, with the proceeds supporting Catholic charities across New York. However, VP Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee, skipped the event citing a scheduling conflict.
Comedian Jim Gaffigan had a rough night at the gala, cracking a joke about Trump renting the White House to Harris, which evoked very few chuckles from the audience.
Midway through his comedy routine, Trump elicited a significant response when he targeted Senator Schumer, stating to the attendees, “Your party has become so woke that if Kamala loses, you have the opportunity to be the first female president.”
Trump also criticized Minnesota’s Governor Walz, quipping… “I once thought the Democrats were bizarre for saying men don’t experience menstruation, but then I encountered Tim Walz.” This comment referred to a contentious Minnesota regulation mandating complimentary tampons in high school restrooms—an assertion Trump inaccurately claimed applied to boys’ restrooms as well.
Trump took another shot at Mayor Eric Adams, jesting… “Nine and a half months ago, I remarked, ‘You know, he just made a disparaging comment about our administration.”
“`He’s on the verge of being charged at any moment.’ And, guess what unfolded … but you’re destined to triumph.”
For the most part, DT seemed to be portraying the jabs as playful banter … but when the conversation turned to former Mayor de Blasio, Trump’s disdain became apparent, labeling him as the “most ineffective” leader in the history of the city.
Trump became so animated during what seemed to be an impromptu speech … that he inadvertently dropped a curse word at a charity event for children hosted by a Cardinal, declaring, “I couldn’t care less if this is humor or not. He was an awful mayor … He did a dreadful job. That’s factual, not comedic.”
Among other prominent guests were House Speaker Mike Johnson, New York Attorney General Letitia James … and RFK Jr., alongside his spouse, Cheryl Hines.
Vice President Kamala Harris made an appearance through a pre-recorded video to deliver a succinct message at the lavish gala.
Overall … it appeared as though each participant reciprocated the exchanges with equal fervor.
