In September, Lil Durk sparked a discussion by asserting that Hip Hop isn’t what it “once was.” The remarks from the rapper of “3 Headed Goat” caught many off guard, particularly as he, along with several artists from the drill scene in Chicago, had once been perceived as outsiders in the hip-hop realm.
On a Tuesday (Oct. 1) episode of Carmelo Anthony and Kid Mero’s “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, Fabolous shared his perspective on this matter. “What did it used to be?” he posed. “Hip Hop is simply what it is. It cannot revert back to what it previously was because that ‘once was’ period anyone speaks of was a different era for all of them, including Lil Durk.”
“One aspect I admire about Durk is [that] the sound and dynamics have shifted around him, yet he’s managed to adjust and discover his new self, continuing to progress,” the New York rapper elaborated. “I don’t believe in a ‘once was.’ Hip Hop will keep transforming. It has been evolving since it first emerged in the ‘70s and ‘80s.”
“It’s also a business now,” Fabolous continued, noting the influence of streaming services, brand collaborations, and record companies. “There was a time when it was merely a craft that we all engaged with and appreciated. Now, it stands as a vast billion-dollar industry, and it needs to be approached with that level of seriousness.”
Previously, Durk and Fabolous collaborated on “Cap” from the 2019 project Summertime Shootout 3: Coldest Summer Ever. Regrettably, fans have yet to hear another project together since.
On the same Tuesday, a potential tracklist for Durk’s upcoming album Love Songs For The Streets 3 surfaced on the internet. An image shared by DJ Akademiks suggests that the project may include former collaborators such as Lil Baby, Rod Wave, Future, and Morgan Wallen.
The Grammy Award-winning artist recently released “Went Hollywood For A Year” and “Turn Up A Notch.” Additionally, a track rumored to be titled “Discontinuing Wockhardt” was teased during Adin Ross’ livestream in September.
