Drake’s actions following his groundbreaking rap showdown with Kendrick Lamar have certainly caught attention. On Friday (Oct. 18), he further stirred the pot by collaborating on the debut album of rising Mexican regional star Chino Pacas, titled Que Sigan Llegando Las Pacas.
The inclusion of Drake’s new verse has ignited vibrant conversations among music enthusiasts, and he accentuated it with a culturally rich commercial for the well-known betting platform, Stake, shared on his Instagram account.
In the new single “Modo Capone,” Drake sings, “La ninfo mami me llama/ Me quiere en su cama, fresas y cocaine/ Travis sonando/ Cubanas me gusta portarlas, dinero es poder.” When rendered in English, the lyrics reference a woman with strong desires who enjoys narcotics paired with berries. As the track unfolds, he turns his back on love and flaunts his opulent Rolex.
One fan remarked, “Drake has gone from a gangster to a cowboy, now a Mexican, a Canadian, Jewish, black, and white—what’s next, man?” Another user commented, “Young Thug reacted to the Mexican quinceanera vibes Drake dropped last night and is like, nah, this guy needs assistance.” Someone else expressed, “Honestly, no one asked for Drake to dabble in Mexican music.”
This isn’t Drake’s first foray into the Latin music scene. On his latest album, he featured a song called “Gently” alongside Bad Bunny. He also previously collaborated on “MIA” with Puerto Rican artist. While Drake is acclaimed for his eclectic musical style, these collaborations continue to bolster Lamar’s assertion that he is, in fact, a culture vulture.
On the track “Not Like Us,” Kendrick emphasized that Drake doesn’t belong to the culture and must rely on popular trends to remain relevant in the music industry. Although Drake’s engagement with Mexican regional music appears unusual, he recently established residency in Texas, a place where Mexican culture is prevalent. While this latest track hasn’t garnered universal acclaim among Hip Hop aficionados, it is performing well in streaming and attracting considerable attention to Chino Pacas and his new album.
