The recent actions of Drake following his monumental rap showdown with Kendrick Lamar have been quite fascinating. On Friday (Oct. 18), he took another bold step by collaborating on a track for the debut album of emerging Mexican regional artist Chino Pacas, titled Que Sigan Llegando Las Pacas.
Drake’s fresh verse has ignited considerable chatter among music aficionados, further highlighted by a culturally-inspired advertisement for the popular betting platform, Stake, shared on his Instagram.
In the new song “Modo Capone,” Drake melodiously delivers, “La ninfo mami me llama/ Me quiere en su cama, fresas y cocaine/ Travis sonando/ Cubanas me gusta portarlas, dinero es poder.” When interpreted in English, this verse refers to a “nympho” woman indulging in drugs paired with strawberries. As the track progresses, he renounces romance and showcases his extravagant Rolex.
One enthusiast remarked, “Drake’s been a gangster, a cowboy, a Mexican, Canadian, Jewish, black, white… what will he morph into next?” Another commenter noted, “Young Thug heard that Mexican quinceañera tune from Drake last night and thought, ‘nah, this dude needs assistance.’” Meanwhile, another pronounced, “Honestly, nobody asked for Drake to step into the realm of Mexican music.”
This isn’t the first occasion Drake has explored his Latin roots. His latest album features a track called “Gently,” in collaboration with Bad Bunny. He also previously appeared on “MIA” alongside the Puerto Rican artist. While Drake is recognized for his eclectic musical style, it appears that these collaborations reinforce Lamar’s assertion that he is a culture vulture.
On “Not Like Us,” the Compton wordsmith pointed out that Drake is not intrinsically part of the culture and often relies on trends to maintain his presence in the music industry. Although Drake’s association with Mexican regional music may seem unusual, he has recently taken up residence in Texas, a hub of rich Mexican heritage. While the hip-hop community has mixed feelings about the new track, its streaming numbers are impressive, inviting a fresh audience to discover Chino Pacas and his latest release.
