On Friday (Sept. 13), The Weeknd unveiled “Dancing In The Flames,” the initial single from his forthcoming album, Hurry Up Tomorrow. The accompanying visual — filmed with Apple’s upcoming iPhone 16 Pro — depicted the Canadian artist driving in a crimson convertible before facing a catastrophic crash, leaving him amidst pouring rain and shattering glass.
“Traffic halts while we’re speeding home/ Blurred lights blanket the empty highway/ I’m hoping we make it, since I’ve been pursuing/ Another epic journey, oh,” The Weeknd serenaded in the introductory verse. He maintained this theme in the song’s chorus: “I can’t wait to greet your face/ Crash as we change lanes/ My affection transcends the agony/ But if I fail to brake/ We’re dancing in the flames.”
“Dancing In The Flames” was crafted by Max Martin and Oscar Holter, who have collaborated with The Weeknd on numerous projects. The track received its initial preview during the artist’s exclusive concert on Sept. 7 in São Paulo, Brazil, where he also featured Playboi Carti.
“The issue with The Weeknd is that his single releases are always puzzling until you hear them alongside the album,” remarked one user on Twitter regarding the new release. Another fan insisted, “I need this Weeknd album right now.”
In a playful manner, one fan noted how the singer often experiences tragic endings in his visuals: “Why does The Weeknd keep meeting his demise in his [music videos]?” Much like “Dancing In The Flames,” he faced untimely ends in videos such as “Starboy,” “Until I Bleed Out,” and “False Alarm.”
Hurry Up Tomorrow currently does not have a specified release date. Nevertheless, it is anticipated to drop before the close of 2024 and will signify The Weeknd’s final album under his current name.
“This album embodies the pinnacle of the project, serving as the third and ultimate chapter infused with existential and self-referential motifs, as suggested by the latest visionary teasers that have ignited fans’ excitement for this concluding volume,” he expressed earlier this month.
