4:03 PM PT — Authorities from Detroit have informed TMZ Sports that, “This inquiry is continuously changing, and emerging details are currently being addressed.”
“We approach every investigation with utmost seriousness, particularly when new claims and facts come to light, and we pledge to respond promptly and transparently.”
The statement further added, “When new information is verified, we adapt our decision-making protocols accordingly.”
“Let it be emphasized that no individual in the City of Detroit is exempt from the law. Anyone found committing a crime will face accountability, irrespective of their rank or status.”
Wide receiver for the Detroit Lions, Jameson Williams, narrowly dodged arrest for possessing a concealed weapon just this month, and investigators are currently looking into the circumstances that allowed this to happen.
At 23, Williams was cruising in Detroit alongside his brother after midnight on October 8 when they were stopped by officers for a traffic infraction.
During the stop, Williams’ brother informed the authorities that there were two firearms inside the vehicle, with one discovered beneath the NFL player’s passenger seat.
As reported by WXYZ in Detroit, one firearm was registered to Williams’ sibling, who possesses a concealed pistol permit, while the other belonged to Williams, who does not hold a CPL.
Williams was informed that he would be arrested for possessing a concealed weapon, but as per the outlet’s report, he attempted to leverage his status as a “Lions player” multiple times, an approach that failed to resonate with the officer.
While Williams’ brother tried to take culpability for both firearms, the former Alabama standout later confessed that one belonged to him, stating it was “for personal safety” due to residing in Detroit.
The wide receiver was eventually handcuffed and seated in the back of a police vehicle… and while it appeared that a trip to jail was imminent, everything turned around when a sergeant arrived on the scene.
The supervisor — who reportedly had a Lions-themed wallpaper on his device — appeared frustrated with the officers present… stating, “I can’t believe you two did this.”
Following a series of calls, the supervisor was overheard on the line recommending special provisions for Williams’ entry into jail… that was, until he received a call from a lieutenant, who seemed to provide the answer he had been seeking.
“Alright, fantastic. Am I clear to release him?” the sergeant inquired, as recorded by the outlet. “You’re a (expletive) lifesaver. I truly appreciate it.”
The moment the supervisor ended the call, Williams was set free.
The entire incident has now sparked an internal investigation… and the Detroit police have formally requested a warrant from the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office for Williams’ arrest due to an alleged possession of a concealed weapon in a vehicle.
The warrant request is currently undergoing scrutiny.
The Lions commented on the situation in a statement… explaining that Williams immediately informed the organization after the incident, and the league has been notified as well.
Currently, Williams — who is serving a suspension for breaching the league’s performance-enhancing substances policy — has tallied 17 receptions for 361 yards and three touchdowns this season.
