Heartbreaking news for the Cleveland Browns — esteemed play-by-play commentator Jim Donovan has sadly passed away at the age of 68 following his courageous battle with chronic lymphocytic leukemia.
The team confirmed the news on Saturday, with owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam describing it as an “extremely challenging day” for the franchise.
Donovan was honored as the “Voice of the Cleveland Browns” during the team’s reentry into the NFL in 1999 … continuing the role for 25 seasons. Despite the team’s struggles, the Boston native remarkably upheld a positive outlook on game days.
Donovan received his initial cancer diagnosis in 2000 … and underwent a bone marrow transplant in 2011, as reported by the Browns. In May 2023, he experienced a relapse of leukemia, necessitating more intensive treatment.
He took a step back from broadcasting before the 2024 season commenced to concentrate on his health.
With a distinguished career, Donovan also functioned as a sports anchor for WKYC for 39 years … before declaring his retirement this past May — with his final on-air appearance a month later.
“His contribution as the Voice of the Browns for 25 years is beyond measure, as he connected with our fans every Sunday showcasing his passion for the Browns and his talent in broadcasting,” stated the Haslams.
“He will be profoundly missed, but he established a legacy that will endure forever. His devotion to this city and its team was only overshadowed by his love for his family.”
“Our thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, Cheryl, his daughter, Meghan, and all those who were privileged to consider Jimmy family or friend.”
Donovan was commemorated by the organization this past September … marked by his induction into the 2024 Class of Browns Legends.
Jim was 68.
Rest in peace.
