Joey Badass has been appointed as the newest artist in residence at NYU’s Clive Davis Institute of Recorded Music, making him one of the youngest—at just 29—to attain this role. On Tuesday (Sept. 24), the institution announced that the Brooklyn-born rapper, whose real name is Jo-Vaughn Virginie Scott, will conduct masterclasses and lectures covering a range of topics from music creation and songwriting to film and television throughout the fall semester.
“I’m deeply honored and grateful to be invited as the artist-in-residence at the Clive Davis Institute at NYU. I eagerly look forward to sharing my experiences and insights with the students and I am certain that I will learn a lot from them in return,” Badass expressed, according to Variety. “My aim is to foster community across various sectors, and this represents a wonderful step forward on that path.”
The Chair of the Clive Davis Institute, Nicholas Sansano, remarked, “We are excited to welcome Joey. We believe the current economic framework of the music industry does not adequately support creatives in pursuing single-source income or maintaining relevance.”
He further stated, “Joey, a versatile artist, songwriter, actor, and social activist, embodies this very real message for our students through personal experience. Equally important is his commitment to mentoring and ensuring the holistic wellbeing of young emerging professionals.”
Musically, Badass released “TELL ME” featuring Chlöe Bailey on Sept. 13. This track is a part of a series of collaborations he has engaged in this year, including IDK’s “DENiM,” “Vertino” with Conway the Machine, the KayCyy-assisted “Passports & Suitcases,” and Lyrical Lemonade’s ensemble track “Fall Out.”
Although he hasn’t released a new album since 2022’s 2000, Badass has been delighting fans with several television appearances. The “DEVASTED” artist portrayed Unique in “Power Book III: Raising Kanan,” although his character tragically met his end in the third season. Additionally, he has been involved in ImpactMENtorship, a program aimed at supporting men of color in the entertainment industry.
