Lucky Daye has gained fame for his silky R&B songs and his remarkable prowess as a lyricist. On the morning of Sunday (Oct. 13), he stirred conversation when he expressed his views on the camaraderie among musicians within the industry.
In a recent tweet, he mentioned, “I dislike that female [artists] back one another significantly more than males. I’m somewhat saddened. But I [hope to] collaborate [with] more males who don’t feel their egos bruised. Think grand!” Many individuals in the comments began suggesting artists they wished to see him team up with in the future.
This statement from the “Roll Some Mo” singer brings to light a surprising perspective as he is well-known for his collaborative spirit. His 2021 project, Table For Two, was crafted to highlight female artists in the music scene. The project included features solely from women, showcasing talents such as Mahalia, Ari Lennox, Queen Naija, Joyce Wrice, and many more.
One supporter remarked, “It’s entirely achievable. You just need to collaborate with those who share a similar mindset and artistic caliber. Collaborating with anyone outside of your sphere will often be perceived as ‘competition.’” Another commenter suggested, “That’s why you should work with Bryson Tiller!!! Daniel Caesar!!”
Daye is recognized as a pivotal figure in the R&B realm. Artists such as Leon Thomas, Bryson Tiller, October London, Mario, and Chris Brown have long been champions of the genre. Emerging talents like Isaiah Falls, Trevor Jackson, Jordan Ward, Joony, and others are actively helping to transform the romance-infused genre.
While there is a need for greater collaboration among male artists in R&B, Daye’s remarks overlook the reality that female artists have also faced rivalries this year. From Megan Thee Stallion vs. Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice vs. Latto, to Cardi B vs. BIA, tensions have surfaced on both sides of the spectrum.
