Megan Thee Stallion is set to take audiences on a journey through her highs and lows in her much-anticipated documentary, Megan Thee Stallion: In Her Words. On Wednesday (Oct. 16), the Houston sensation opened up about the heart-wrenching loss of her mother and the unrelenting criticism she faced following the shooting incident involving Tory Lanez in the film’s premiere trailer.

“I’ve made up my mind that I am going to cancel all my performances. Right now, I’m not enjoying myself, and I don’t want to force it. How can I truly be Megan Thee Stallion if I’m not having a good time?” the Grammy Award-winning artist expressed in the video.

“Music has always been a part of my existence. I wouldn’t have reached this point without my mother. She was like a fierce rapper. I thought, ‘When I grow up, I want to be just like her.’ That’s when I truly began shaping the persona of Megan Thee Stallion,” she shared regarding her motivation to pursue music. “Those were my happiest times, and then, my mom, she suddenly passed away.”

“I’m feeling completely shattered. I think I lost sight of who I was, and when life became overwhelming, I realized I didn’t have her support,” the rapper continued. Her mother, Holly Thomas, who also managed her career, succumbed to brain cancer in 2019. To pay tribute to her parents—her father, Joseph Pete Jr., also passed away when she was 15—she established the Pete and Thomas Foundation.

In other reflections, the Traumazine artist recounted the disturbing event with Lanez in 2020, who was sentenced to a decade in prison for multiple charges, including assault with a semiautomatic weapon, possession of an unregistered loaded firearm in a vehicle, and negligent firearm discharge.

“The shooting. The treachery. I found myself diving too deeply into social media. It felt like everyone was against me. I experienced a significant breakdown,” she elaborated. “I think Megan Thee Stallion is now attempting to safeguard Megan Pete, and it’s time for that moment in the film where I rise up and take action.”
