On Thursday (Sept. 19), Tina Knowles shared her thoughts on Dolly Parton’s comments regarding Beyoncé not being nominated for any Country Music Awards (CMAs). The renowned “9 to 5” artist had earlier referred to COWBOY CARTER as more of a “niche album,” noting the challenging nature of the decision, especially considering that other musicians “dedicate their entire lives” to the country music scene.
In response on Instagram, Mama Tina expressed, “Dear Dolly, we adore you, but Beyoncé has indeed been hustling tirelessly since she was just 9! She has deep country roots, too. She’s perfected her artistry and set records across various genres.”
“Beyoncé doesn’t need to confine herself to one genre to gain recognition; her skills and dedication are evident! She’s been putting in hard work, and it’s unfair that others are expected to ‘spend their lives’ in a single field to be acknowledged!” the message elaborated.
To be fair, Parton’s initial remarks didn’t entirely dismiss Beyoncé’s background. “She’s a country girl from Texas and Louisiana, so she definitely had that upbringing,” the Dolly artist remarked in an interview with Variety. “It’s not as if she simply materialized from nowhere.”
“The CMAs likely thought, ‘We can’t really overlook everyone who has spent their whole lives in this field,’” she continued. “I don’t interpret it as an intentional exclusion. It seems more related to what the country charts and the artists who consistently contribute to it are accomplishing, rather than just focusing on a niche album.”
Significantly, Beyoncé provided her own rendition of Parton’s “Jolene” for COWBOY CARTER. The Tennessee native also lent her voice to one of the project’s interludes, “DOLLY P.” Featured artists on the album included Tanner Addell, Miley Cyrus, Post Malone, and Shaboozey, who voiced their support amid the pop star’s perceived oversight.
“Thank you, [Beyoncé], for paving the way for us, sparking a dialogue, and for presenting us with one of the most groundbreaking country albums ever!” he remarked via X, previously known as Twitter.
