It seems that Tyla’s eponymous debut album will not be contending for R&B accolades at the forthcoming 67th Grammy Awards. Instead, the artist from South Africa is anticipated to be recognized in the pop categories, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter on Monday (Oct. 21).

As per the source, TYLA was “shifted to Best Pop Vocal Album” by The Recording Academy’s R&B selection committee, which consists of fellow musicians, songwriters, and producers. Should the “On and On” performer receive a nomination, she might find herself competing against Sabrina Carpenter’s hit album Short n’ Sweet, Ariana Grande’s eternal sunshine, and Taylor Swift’s THE TORTURED POETS DEPARTMENT — particularly notable, the latter project spent 15 weeks leading the Billboard 200 charts.

In light of this development, Tyla expressed her thoughts on X with the message, “I create it all,” accompanied by a face blowing a kiss emoji. Throughout the 14 tracks on her studio debut, the singer blended pop, R&B, and amapiano influences, featuring songs like “Truth or Dare,” “On My Body” with Becky G, and “Butterflies.”

Additionally, it’s important to highlight that “Water” earned the title of Best African Music Performance at the 66th Grammy Awards held in February.

At the MTV Video Music Awards in September, Tyla asserted that “African music can also be pop music.” While receiving the Best Afrobeats award, she elaborated, “There’s a tendency to categorize all African artists under Afrobeats. It’s a reality, and despite Afrobeats having paved the way for many opportunities, African music encompasses a vast range of styles.”

TYLA + was released earlier this month and includes three new tracks. It introduced songs like “PUSH 2 START,” “BACK to YOU,” and “SHAKE AH” featuring Tony Duardo, Optimist Music ZA, and Ez Maestro. Tyla is set to promote the deluxe version with a series of performances in South Africa. Anticipated appearances include a show at Cape Town’s GrandWest Grand Arena on Dec. 5 and Pretoria’s SunBet Arena on Dec. 7.
