Tyla “absolutely cannot” eat before stepping onto the stage, she confessed during a conversation with BLACKPINK’s Lisa on Thursday (Oct. 17). For Rolling Stone‘s “Musicians on Musicians,” the duo discussed their audiences, music releases, and pre-performance rituals, among other topics.
“I need to have my meal well in advance because I feel like if I eat right before a performance, something might go awry. I’m worried that if my digestion acts up, that’s a disaster waiting to happen. I’m not about to take that risk,” the “Jump” artist comically remarked on the subject.
“I enjoy praying with my crew, jamming to upbeat music, and sharing laughs. I center myself and release my trust that it’s going to be an amazing show.” Tyla and Lisa were both featured performers at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show that took place on Tuesday (Oct. 15). The South African singer commenced her set with a performance of “Water,” followed by “PUSH 2 START” from TYLA+.
Earlier in their chat, the Grammy Award recipient elaborated on why it “took time” to unveil her debut studio album, which was released in March. “I had a distinct vision for it. I intended to remain faithful to my roots—clearly, African music—but also integrate a variety of pop and R&B styles,” she explained. “I collaborated with numerous talents to perfect the sound. When I finally achieved it, I dove right in. It was such a relief to reach that stage.”
TYLA features contributions from Travis Scott, Tems, and Gunna, in addition to notable tracks like “ART” and “Water.” The latter won Best Afrobeats at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards. In her acceptance speech, the global sensation reaffirmed that “African music can indeed be pop music as well.”
Regrettably, Tyla was unable to tour for the album as she had originally intended due to a worsening injury. Nevertheless, she is set to perform three shows in South Africa come December.
