Men’s basketball coach at the University of South Florida, Amir Abdur-Rahim, passed away on Thursday, as confirmed by the institution, following a medical procedure that went disastrously awry.
Coach Abdur-Rahim was just 43 years of age.
“Everyone connected to South Florida Athletics shares in the sorrow of Coach Abdur-Rahim’s family,” stated a USF representative, Michael Kelly.
“He was genuine, motivated, and his lively character won the hearts of all within Bulls Nation. Coach Abdur-Rahim has left an enduring legacy on our student-athletes, the university itself, and the surrounding community.”
The university has indicated that the coach’s passing resulted from complications during a medical treatment … though specifics remain vague.
Before last season commenced, Abdur-Rahim joined the USF basketball team … and he promptly made a significant and favorable impression on the program.
In fact, during his inaugural season, the USF head coach was honored as the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year after guiding his team to an impressive 25-8 record.
The University of South Florida clinched their regular season conference title … even earning a coveted ranking within the top 25 during the season.
Although still relatively young, Abdur-Rahim possessed nearly two decades of experience in coaching … having embarked on this career following his graduation from Southeastern Louisiana University in 2004.
Among his many commendable qualities, Coach Abdur-Rahim was highly regarded as an outstanding recruiter … having played a pivotal role in securing future NBA number one overall draft pick, Anthony Edwards, during his time at the University of Georgia.
Amir Abdur-Rahim, brother to former NBA player Shareef Abdur-Rahim, is survived by his wife, Arianne, and their three children.
May he rest in peace.
